Gertrude Louse Parr Wilson daughter of the late Clarence and Ellen Nyswonger passed away on December 2nd, at her home in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
She was born at the farm home of her grandparents on January 7, 1917, near Lacona, Iowa. Her parents and grandparents migrated by freight and passenger cars to Wausaukee, Wi in 1920.
Mrs. Wilson graduated from the Wausaukee High School in 1934, from the Stephenson Training School in Marinette in 1935. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1965 from Oshkosh University and a Master's Degree in Elementary Education in 1972 from Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
The Parr family moved to Pembine, Wisconsin in 1935. She made her home there until 1996 when she moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Mrs. Wilson taught the Miller, Moreau and Mountain Rural Schools in the Township of Niagara. She also taught 9 years in Pembine and 21 years in Niagara where she was a student teacher supervisor.
She was a 4-H Leader in Pembine, served as President and Secretary of the PTA, was President of the Niagara Teachers Organization and Secretary of the Niagara Grange. Past member of the Pembine Legion Auxiliary and Senior Citizens. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pembine and served as clerk for 4 years. She also served as Sunday School Teacher and Choir member.
She married Andrew Wilson in 1940 who preceded her in death in 1988. Her son, Pat passed away on December 13, 1998. She is also preceded in death by her brother William C. Parr and a great nephew Clinton Parr.
Mrs. Wilson retired from teaching in 1978 but continued substation work for 8 years. She loved teaching and kept in touch with many of her students.
She did oil painting, stained glass art, enjoyed target shooting, cared for a garden and large lawn, was a bird watcher and studied geology. For many years, she did genealogy and researched and recorded the history of four families. She wrote many articles for the Peshtigo Times, the Iron Mountain Daily News and the Wausaukee Magazine. Also an avid Packer Fan.
Her pride and joy are her four grandchildren; Lauralee Shawhan (Joseph); Pat Wilson Jr. (Diana), Shawn Wilson (Laurie), Ailene Bitnar (Michael). Also great grandchildren she adored: Joshua and Justin LaCoursiere, Mia, Jordan and Rachel Shawhan, Jessica and Diane Wilson, Steven and Samantha Wilson, Taylor Bitnar and Hailee Wilson. She was also a great great grandmother to 8 children.
Visitation will be at Messar Funeral Home, Wausaukee on Sunday, December 5, 2010 from 1 pm to 2pm with funeral services to follow. Pastor Lin Wittmann officiating. Burial will be at Pembine Cemetery on May 21, 2011 at 1 pm.
